I've been playing and coaching tennis for over four decades.Tennis was certainly a great passion of my life. Seven years ago after we immigrated from Germany to New Zealand my wife Karin got involved with mosaics. She has experienced such a joy and pleasure in creating some beautiful pieces along the way.
Upon observing her I had come to realization that mosaics could be just the right medium for me to achieve a great degree of satisfaction. In 1999 I did decide to start with mosaics. From the very beginning I had a strong inclination towards it which led me to believe that I could not possibly envisage myself doing anything else.
However in 2004 I met Mark Read, a very talented landscape designer from Natural Habitats who had encouraged me to make a transition to pebble mosaics. To this very day I owe special thanks to Mark, since upon following his advice I had embarked onto the most exhilarating journey of my life. I felt I was on a mission. I've made a strong commitment to myself that I will excercise pebble mosaics with the utmost intensity and dedication that I'm capable of.
When you will have seen one pebble mosaic in person you will perceive how single pebbles "move", how expressive they are and how full of texture one pebble mosaic can be. I call it the sculpture in the ground.
A short while ago I came across a sentence from a renowned novelist and thinker. He said that we do not invent our mission in life but that we do detect it. I was so struck by this message since it is so applicable to my life.
